June Meeting Follow-Up
Presentation
of Zoning Ordinances Update on June 10, 2009 - Rhonda
Mack, Director of Surry County Department of Planning and John Hartley,
Brandon Currence Architects, discussed the proposed changes to the
Surry County Zoning Ordinances.
Surry County Zoning Ordinances have not been revised since 1975.
Growth in County for the last 10 years was at 11%. Since 2005, Surry
has seen the development of 175 lots, and 86 of those lots were
converted from agricultural to residential. Growth for the next
decade could hit 21% and revisions in the ordinances will help insure
growth with concern for our rural environment.
Items
discussed and under consideration:
These
were just a few of the issues discussed and my
apologies to Ms Mack and Mr. Hartley if I have misinterpreted any
issue. The Second Community Meeting will be held in late
Fall to discuss the actual proposal followed by 2 public hearings.
Land owners of adjacent properties must be notified in writing if
any change in density is allowed.
Reminder
- There will be no Chamber of Commerce Meeting
in July.
Our next meeting will be August 12, 2009.
Surry
Side Book
The
Surry Chamber of Commerce is partnering with Chamber Pubs
to develop a 50 page, 4 color book about Surry County. The Surry book
will be an annual publication and offer businesses in the County an
opportunity to advertise their product or service to tourists or new
residents throughout the year. The publication will include details
about life in Surry, its people, history, and businesses.
Tom Powell, Creative Director of The Addison Group,
the parent company of Chamber Pubs and his crew: Phyllis
Speidell, Creative Writer; John Sheally, Photographer; and Lance Carmine,
Advertising Account Representative will be organizing the project.
They produce a similar book for the Isle of Wight Chamber of Commerce
and copies of that book can be picked-up at The Center,
75 Colonial Trail East, in Surry. For information about the publication
or to place an ad, contact Greg Schaale, President, Surry County Chamber
of Commerce - greg@gregschaale.com.
